The Global PA Network is campaigning to protect your careers as PA Professionals. We are delighted that Kingston University Business School, Centre for Research into Employment, Skills & Society has joined with the Global PA Network on research into the PA profession.

 

This academic research, which is the largest ever conducted into the Secetarial/PA profession in the UK, will identify opportunities for training and development and breaking through the glass ceiling. This research into the PA profession is long overdue and we are working in line with the recommendations of the Leitch Report of 2005 which highlights the importance of upskilling of the UK workforce by 2020.

 

The Macleod Review of July 2009, commissioned by the Department of Business also recommends that in order for organisations to work effectively every sector of their workforce needs to be fully engaged in the growth of their organisation.  In many instances the Secretarial/PA sector is the forgotten sector of the workforce and we well ensure that the role is included and valued and your views are listened to.

The Global PA Network is committed to promoting to its members the aims, importance and benefits of professional development in contributing to both organisational and individual success.

Why do today’s PA’s need to undertake CPD?

CPD stands for ‘Continuing Professional Development’ it is defined as:

‘the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of professional knowledge, understanding and skill and the development of personal qualities necessary to undertake professional and technical duties throughout an individual’s working life’.

The UK now operates in knowledge and service economies across global markets, and the need for the workforce to develop their skills and knowledge on an ongoing basis has become crucial for organisations to work successfully. After completing formal educational qualifications, such as GCSE’s, diplomas or degrees, many people take a varied approach to how they continual to learn within their workplace and roles. Some are very active, whereas others do not do anything at all. However, without developing ourselves and expanding our knowledge and skills after completing formal education, we become ‘stuck’ and ‘left behind’, particularly with the rapid advancements with technology. The undertaking of CPD is therefore crucial for individuals’ to keep up to date with new technical and business related subjects, which enables them to be even better at what they do.


In 2009 the Global PA Network conducted a comprehensive research project with Kingston University on the skills today’s PAs need to sustain and develop their careers. The findings clearly demonstrated that every PA needs to undertake ‘life-long learning’ to maintain and improve their skills and knowledge, and to expand within and beyond their roles. As a PA, you should view CPD as a way of structuring your life-long learning, and as the key to unlocking your career development. This will ensure that you are working to your full capabilities and are as successful as possible.
